I’ve been practicing yoga for a long time, and in recent years have noticed the abundance of phrases such as “love and light” and “good vibes only” being thrown around.  Quite honestly, these statements irritate the crap out of me.  Why?  Because, to me, they feel judgmental, one-sided, and invalidating of what it is to be a human being.  The human experience consists of both the “light” and the “dark”, the “good” and the “bad”.  They’re two sides of the same coin, and one doesn’t exist without the other.  And the darkness can be just as beautiful as the light.

In my professional world, I’ve worked with so many people who have spent a lifetime trying to avoid feeling their “bad” or “dark” emotions.  This shows up in all kinds of addictions, violence, self-harm, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, etc.  The problem is, is that you can’t pick and choose what emotions you get to experience, and you can’t truly know the light is you haven’t truly known the dark.

So why are we so afraid of the darkness?  How would our lives and the world be different if we accepted that the darkness exists, and maybe even embraced it?
